The next day, we drove up to Tacoma and went to an interesting place, called the Glass Museum. It's the home of Dale Chihuly, and he had some involvement in building it. It was okay to take pictures of the few pieces I'm showing you, but the actual museum pieces are off limits. It's too bad, because there was an excellent exhibit of childrens pieces. The program brings children in to draw their ideas on paper and then they pick one and make two of them with the kids watching. When it's done cooling in two weeks, one is presented to the child and the other goes in the museum. They were fantastic! They looked exactly like things kids draw-but no pictures. We watched a movie where they showed the whole program-pretty neat. Here are a couple pieces I could show you.

They have a room in a dome with the furnaces in it, they call the Hot Shop.

It includes a viewing section.

There's also a screen up above, to get a closer look. They also have three screens out in the lobby where you can watch.

They constantly have to put the glass piece in the furnace to heat it up, because they have to work on it while it's hot.

The term "red hot" takes on new meaning.

Here they're working on a piece that will be a light fixture. The visiting artist while we were there was the gal in the tan pants and black shirt , sitting down in a prior picture. She directs the rest of the staff.

This is a Chihuly piece that he made when he was guest artist.
